Upcoming Opportunities For Learning

by: Kimberly Bell

Athens State University’s Center for Lifelong Learning is the Continuing Education and Outreach Division of Athens State. We provide educational opportunities to promote lifelong learning opportunities in the areas of: Professional Development, Personal Enrichment, Concerts & Lectures, Conferences, and Youth Programs. We also offer facility space rentals for a broad spectrum of events, including business meetings, luncheons, receptions, reunions, and corporate functions.

Our fall curriculum is underway, and we are excited about the new classes that are being offered. Many professional development courses in Microsoft Office, ServSafe Food, Leadership Training, Whole Brain Teaching, and Business Management are available to expand your knowledge base in specific areas of interest. We also are offering enrichment opportunities to continue growing your personal interests: Sign Language, Pottery, Blacksmith, and FREE Yoga classes are currently available!

If you would prefer online learning, we have new and exciting Certificate Programs in the areas of Accounting and Finance, Business Communication, Career and Hospitality, Computer Applications, Green and Renewable Energy, Healthcare and Allied Health, Human Resources, Industrial and Skilled Trades, Legal and Criminal Justice, Multimedia and Graphic Design, Programming and Web Applications, Social Media for Business, Spanish in the Workplace, and Distance Learning for K-12 Educators.

Computers for Seniors is becoming an increasingly popular class among our senior adult students. We provide group classes or private sessions for anyone wanting to learn more about using a computer. Basic Computer Information, Email, Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and many combinations of these topics are popular requests for individual sessions.

In partnership with the United Way of Athens and Limestone County, the Center for Lifelong Learning is offering ACT Prep and Tutoring Classes in the areas of Reading/English, Science, and Mathematics. Students may select one, two, or all three subjects as they prepare for the upcoming ACT. Our next ACT Prep and Tutoring Class will begin on October 30 and will meet weekly through December 6, just in time for the December 8 ACT Exam! The cost ranges from $65 per student to $105 per student, depending on the number of subjects selected for study. Test-taking strategies, practice exams, and an ACT Prep book are included in the price of the class. Over the past year of providing ACT instruction to area high school students, we have helped several students obtain an overall ACT score of 30, and many have, on average, improved their ACT scores by 3 points overall. If your student is struggling with the fundamentals of ACT test-taking or even if he/she is looking for some practice opportunities for the very first time, this is definitely a class worth exploring!
