Listen To Your Body – The View From The Bridge

Recently, I attended a brunch on breast and ovarian cancer awareness. It was an invitation from a friend who is a survivor of breast cancer. The event was thought provoking and very intentional about women and their health. As I sat and listened to women on their journey battling various diseases sharing their most intimate details, and watched the expressions of others around me, it was truly an eye and mind opener.

The speakers spoke about healthcare, screenings, diet, exercise… and FAITH.

As each speaker presented and shared, I listened so intently on each word that was spoken, for I knew it was all from the heart – Women from all walks of life and backgrounds sitting in the room sharing what we all have in common – our health!

The event was almost over and then came one more presenter. She was a nurse, and she gave us the simplest but most vital advice. She said “Listen to your body.” Stop and just listen to your body. It tells us what we need to hear, but we are not listening. We go to the doctor and expect a miracle, but we have to start listening to our bodies. No one else can hear or feel what you do.

When we listen, our bodies have a way of telling us what we need more or less of:

  • Start with faith and prayer for life’s journey
  • Keep a Journal/Write it down – date…what…when…how…
  • Don’t avoid or tune out the warning signs
  • Exercise your body and your mind. Move from your current physical and mental state
  • Meditate
  • Be still
  • Observe – Look at yourself without the clothes, makeup…
  • When eating, ask yourself, “Will this food sustain me or exhaust me?” Eat clean and local.
  • Think about what you need, not what you want
  • Trust your gut and intuition
