KALB Calendar of Events
In the midst of this cold and rainy winter, the KALB Commission has been looking toward Spring! Here is what we have planned for the first half of 2014:
TREE SEEDLING GIVEAWAY – Feb 15th
Just over 1,000 seedlings will be given away to Limestone County residents at Big Spring Memorial Park from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Species will include a variety of oaks, Japanese Maples, Crepe Myrtle, Longleaf Pine, Beautyberry, River Birch, Green Ash and more. Orders will be limited to 6 trees per person. Any leftover trees will be given away first-come, first served from 11-11:30 a.m. at the park and on Monday at the KALB office if any remain available.
Are you a paid member of KALB? If so, you will receive first choice of available trees, limited to 6.
Seedling order form is available at KALBCares.com or under Events on our Facebook page.
ELK RIVER CANOE & KAYAK TRAIL CLEANUP – Mar 8th
Over 40 volunteers removed nearly 2.5 tons of trash from the Elk River and surrounding land areas last March. We hope to have even more participants involved in the cleanup this year. Thanks to Fort Hampton Outfitters in Elkmont, we will have some kayaks and possibly canoes available. Flat bottom boats are also welcomed. Lunch and bottled water will be provided.
If you, your family, or a group is interested in participating, please let us know and we’ll keep you updated. This is a great opportunity for students looking for community service hours.
Watch for information about possible group competitions!
ALUMINUM CAN BASH – Mar 24th-28th
Receive special pricing on aluminum cans from Metal Exchange located at the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center during normal business hours.
FREE DUMP DAY – Mar 29th
Limestone County residents may take up to one truckload of trash to the Transfer Station from 7 a.m. to Noon.
Restrictions:
- Maximum of 4 automobile tires
- No medical or hazardous waste
- Appliances must have compressors removed or have a certificate indicating Freon was professionally removed.
- No contractors may dump free.
This is for LIMESTONE COUNTY residents only and no trash will be accepted after 12 Noon.
EARTH DAY & OUTDOOR CELEBRATION – Apr 26th
This family-friendly event is a community favorite! Enjoy games, food, entertainment, make and take crafts for the kids, and door prizes while visiting exhibitors and enjoying programs — and it’s all free! KALB is currently accepting registrations from businesses, individuals, and student groups who would like to have an exhibitor space. Exhibit must include earth-friendly or healthy living products and/or services, environmental education, or information on outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, cycling, etc. Exhibitor Registration forms can be found on KALB’s Facebook page under Events.
KALB is also actively seeking partners to help sponsor this event. Please call KALB for details on partnership opportunities.
There is plenty to do in Athens and Limestone County all year around. We hope you will make plans to participate in some or all of our activities!
