Even The Tomatoes Know It’s Duck Season At KALB!

By: Lynne Hart

Yes, it is definitely duck season at KALB, and even the tomatoes in Limestone County know it!

Everyone in Limestone County benefits from the work of KALB, and we have several ways to have fun while supporting this organization.

Run it, walk it, or waddle it! Just don’t miss it!

Registration is open for this run taking place on Saturday, September 15 at 7 a.m. Pre-registration fee is currently only $20 and must be paid or postmarked by 9/8/18. Late- and race-day registration is $25. Online registration is available at www.raceroster.com, and a printable form is available at www.duckandrun5K.com.

This mildly challenging, certified course (AL10016JD) takes participants through beautiful historic neighborhoods and downtown Athens. T-shirts, race bags, Mid-pack Award, a drawing for a cash prize and a MaggieMoo’s certificate for free monthly ice cream will be part of this event.

For information on the Duck and Run 5K, contact Eric or Leigh Patterson at duckandrun5K@yahoo.com.

KALB’s rubber duck derby has been taking place annually since 2001! Even we can’t believe this is our 18th year. Kids and adults just can’t resist watching hundreds of rubber ducks float down the spillway at Big Spring Memorial Park in Athens; so come and watch them race on Saturday, October 6, beginning at 4:00 p.m.

We already have a great list of prizes, and we are happy to announce that American Leakless Co. will, once again this year, be our $1,000 Grand Prize Diamond Duck Sponsor! In addition, they are also providing two $100 and a $50 cash prizes for the race! This company has been very supportive of KALB, and we are so pleased to share our growing partnership.

Online duck adoptions are now open at www.KALBCares.com under the EVENTS tab. Individual ducks can be adopted for a $5.00 donation to KALB. Papa Murphy’s Quack Packs are available for a $25 donation and include 6 ducks (1 free) and a coupon for 25% off your entire order at Papa Murphy’s Pizza with no expiration! A Quack Pack also guarantees at least 1 duck in each heat.

KALB will be at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention and will have duck adoptions available. Our list of prizes is great again this year and includes the $1,000 American Leakless Co. Grand Prize, a $250 Osborne’s Jewelry gift certificate, a Canebrake golf package, a $100 Hobbs Jewelers Gift Card, cash prizes from American Leakless, Distinctive Landscaping, Limestone Drug, gift certificates from Eastside Pharmacy and much more!

This will be our second year to host this event and we are so excited! We’ve made a few changes and we are excited to share them.

There is no initial cost to participate. KALB will provide any business, organization, or individual with a flat wooden duck on a stand to decorate. Our theme this year is “Athens Bicentennial: 200 Years Of Duck Tales.” This can include anything Athens related from past or present. The theme is a suggestion and not a requirement of participation (although we think it would be fun).

Ducks will compete for “Most Wanted – People’s Choice” and “Best Decorated Duck – Judges’ Choice” ribbons. Decorated ducks will be on display beginning October 15 and raffle tickets sold. Judging and final raffle ticket sales will take place during the Chamber’s Christmas Open House in November.

For more information on the Duck Decorating Contest, visit www.KALBCares.com and click the EVENTS tab, email KALBCares@gmail.com or call 256-233-8000.

Join in the fun and support an organization that works hard to bring environmental education, awareness, and opportunity to everyone.
