Community Breakfast – Science Meets Faith

By: Wanda Campbell

Everyone is talking about the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two people on the moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969.

It was an amazing thing, and everyone I knew wanted to become an astronaut after that. I never wanted to be an astronaut, but I have been amazed by our space program, space movies, and books about space. When the Hubble Telescope was launched in April 1990, it was the most significant thing to happen since Galileo invented the telescope in 1610.

I am a person of faith, and I have questions. If you have questions too, join us at Athens State University Center for Lifelong Learning on June 28 for the presentation, Science Meets Faith-One Small Look at God’s Vast Universe, by Jim Odom. Mr. Odom has retired from a very distinguished career at NASA’s Marshall’s Space Flight Center where, among other responsibilities, he was the Director of Science and Engineering, Project Manager of the Hubble Space Telescope, and also served on the Space Shuttle Team and Apollo Project. In this discussion of “Science Meets Faith,” Mr. Odom vividly outlines the ways in which the laws of astrophysics merge with God’s laws in an expansive universe from which we are still learning. See actual NASA photographs from parts of the universe yet to be explored, and hear how those extragalactic components tie in with Creation.

Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. in the Mezzanine of the Center for Lifelong Learning, followed by Mr. Odom’s presentation. The event is free and open to the public. If you have any accessibility needs or concerns, please contact us at or via phone at (256) 233-8260.

We still have openings in camps. Coming up next week is Archery Level II, The Super Sitter Course, Soccer, and Let’s Have a Food Fite. The week of June 17 will be Hands Up! American Sign Language Camp, Photography for Kids, and Hip Hop Camp. The week of June 24 we will have The Great Brick Adventure, Stop Motion Animation, Fire It Up Pottery, and Art Explorers.

We have also scheduled a trip, for adults and children accompanied by adults, to the Tennessee Aquarium on Friday, July 19. Everyone will gather at the Center for Lifelong Learning by 8:00 a.m. and we will return by 5:00 p.m., depending on traffic. This trip is limited to 10; so register early.
