Christmas In High Cotton

Some mothers and grandmothers will receive artwork for Christmas this year. Members of the Athens Mayor’s Youth Commission took an art class at High Cotton Arts and created Christmas angel paintings. One class was taught by Lee Shepherd, and one class by Vickie Camp and Val Rainey.
anonymous sponsor funded the class for the 40 students from Athens High School, Athens Bible School, Lindsay Lane Christian Academy, and a home-school program in Athens. Half of the Youth Commission took the class on Dec. 18, and the other half took the class on Dec. 19.
“They learned how to look at images as shapes, such as using hearts to form angels,” said Athens Arts League Board Vice President Diane Lehr, who is also a Youth Commission mentor. “The students were so excited to see what they could create, and I know their mothers and grandmothers will cherish their paintings.”
The Youth Commissioners have a different program each month from October through May to learn about city departments, non-profit agencies, and quality of life opportunities in Athens.
