On Saturday, March 9, several very dedicated and brave volunteers came out to clean up areas in Ardmore, Tanner, West Limestone, and Athens — even with the threat of rain.
Because of the potential for heavy rains, many volunteers stayed home, and that’s okay. Safety first.
It is not too late to be a part of our attack on trash and make a difference. Anyone who picks up trash and documents the amount of trash picked up (number of bags, description and location of large items, etc.) will be celebrated on our social media sites!
More importantly, the reporting of your cleanup activities will help us to receive additional funding to purchase supplies from Keep Alabama Beautiful and the Alabama Department of Transportation. The supplies used during this Trash Attack were funded by these organizations, and the more we can document the results of their use, the more funding could come our way.
ONE BAG CHALLENGE
Limestone County’s new county commission chairman, Collin Daly, rolled up his sleeves to help with the attack on trash last Saturday. He partnered with Sally Marks to clean up the I-65/Hwy 72 interchange, which was an embarrassment. When the event was over, several of us were sharing how we felt about the amount of litter that is present in this community.
Mr. Daly said he’d like to see everyone pick up just one bag of trash near their home or in front of their business. It would be AMAZING what could be accomplished if even 10% of Athens-Limestone residents took him up on that! So, the gauntlet has been thrown down! The challenge has been issued!
KALB would love to see photos of everyone who takes up this challenge. So get out there. Pick up at least one bag of trash and post your photos on the Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Facebook page using the hashtag #OneBagChallenge.
SIGN OUT SUPPLIES
KALB is prepared to sign out supplies needed for any volunteer willing to attack trash! We can provide vests, trash bags, litter grabbers, and gloves. Just give us a call and let us know when you’d like to stop by the office to pick them up. Then go out and make a difference!
It is inconceivable to everyone associated with KALB, including our volunteers, how anyone can just toss their trash. It is selfish and shows a definite lack of community pride. Sadly, there will always be those among us who will never care. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. Their carelessness does environmental harm, causes injury to wildlife, and is an embarrassing welcome to anyone visiting our county.
BE ONE WHO WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
